Grab a breath mint and someone special because today is International Kissing Day. Legend says that it all started with a dental insurance company in the UK that dreamed up the idea, but in time we all started celebrating this day, and let’s be honest, we take every excuse we get to kiss that special someone or maybe to work up the courage to tell someone we like them and would like to kiss them.
It’s true that it started from shady origins but as soon as it was adopted as an official holiday, around 20 years ago, the holiday managed to inspire all of us.
If we were to define kisses we would probably start off with signs of affection and get into more details like situations, the first kiss that gives us butterflies, a more formal kiss maybe, different cultures kiss different times when they meet, some don’t kiss at all, or maybe a more passionate kiss, between lovers and the sad goodbye kiss.
There are also the kisses that different people made famous, like the kiss between the nurse and the sailor in Times Square in 1945 at the end of World War II or the more recent kiss that made the news due to a photo, during the Vancouver Riot, when the guy was trying to calm down his girlfriend.
No matter how bad the situation is, a kiss can give you a sense of security and make you feel better even if it’s for a short period, after all, it is said that a kiss can be 10 times more effective than morphine in reducing pain.
Also, kissing is good for your health, researches show that you burn 26 calories when you kiss and also your blood vessels expand, your cheeks flush and your heart pumps more oxygen to your brain and let’s not forget about the serotonin, dopamine and adrenaline our bodies release.
Kissing Day is mainly invented to make us appreciate kissing more so go ahead and smooch someone you love today!
